Hostas...quite dead leaves

Every year we grow Hostas and every fall I collect the fragile translucent leaves, wash them gently and dry them in my studio...Most years I photograph them once they have become contorted ephemeral sculptures ....architects of light. Last year I photographed them by moonlight in the icy cold water on our deck, rushing to get them in before ice and snow destroyed them. Harvested at the verge of organic re-absorption, their age and elegance recorded for my pleasure...maybe yours.

Once the leaves have lost all their moisture they are surprisingly durable, I have had some for years...
I photograph  the individual leaves and occasionally transform the images using Photoshop.

Junkus scribbilarius...pond rush

marginalia... a rush of pond thoughts
marginalia...something unique and wonderful to find, not so common as you might believe...fortunately some students over time have been encouraged to and relied upon making notes and expressing themselves in books. Gratefully I collect (harvest) them  for 'the roots' of my own pencil grass series...even more perfect are these which border
Walden  -  Civil Disobedience...
Henry David Thoreau.
Riverside Editions... circa  1960.

*check out the poem Marginalia by Billy Collins...
try the library or online...there is a video reading on YouTube.

*Studs Terkel, the oral historian, was known to admonish friends who would read his books but leave them free of markings. He told them that reading a book should not be a passive exercise, but rather a raucous conversation.
